The plain-English guide
What is an MCP app?
An MCP app is a tool your AI can use. On its own, an AI like Claude or ChatGPT can only talk. Add an MCP app and it can do a real job for you, such as setting up your event and selling the tickets, right there in the conversation.
The four words you will see
- MCP app
- A tool your AI can use. Add one and your AI can do a real job with it, such as selling tickets for your event, instead of only talking about it.
- Connector
- The way you add an MCP app to Claude or ChatGPT. You paste one web address into the settings and sign in. Nothing to install.
- Skill
- A written, step-by-step way of doing one job well, such as drafting a newsletter. Your AI follows it rather than making it up each time.
- Knowledge pack
- Researched reference your AI reads before it acts, such as how UK VAT works, so it answers from current facts rather than a guess.
An everyday example
You run a networking evening. You tell your AI: “Set up our October networking night, 80 places, £15 a ticket.” With an events MCP app added, it creates the event, asks you anything it does not know, reads the price back to you, and only puts tickets on sale when you say yes. You never open another website.
Without the app, the same AI could only tell you how you might do it yourself.
Questions people ask
- Do I need to be technical?
- No. If you can change a setting in an app on your phone, you can add a connector. Your AI does the rest in plain conversation.
- Which AI do I need?
- One that supports connectors. Claude and ChatGPT both do. On Claude, connectors need a paid plan. Each app page says which AIs it works with.
- Is it safe to let an AI use a tool?
- Ours are built so that nothing public, costly or permanent happens without you saying yes in the chat. Each app page also lists what it keeps about you.
- What does MCP stand for?
- Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard that lets AI assistants use outside tools in the same way, whichever company made the assistant.
